Cambria County Courts Advise of Reported Phone Scam
News Article
November 26, 2024
Cambria County Court of Common Pleas President Judge Linda Fleming is advising the public to stay vigilant against a recently reported phone scam involving the Cambria County court system.
The scam involves calls that “spoof” or mimic the sheriff’s office telephone number. During the spoof call, the individual placing the call advises that a court date has been missed, for which there is an outstanding subpoena. The caller then states that because of the failure to appear, a substantial fine is owed and a warrant will be issued for failure to pay which will result in being held in contempt of court. The caller requests that fines be paid in Bitcoin and ends the call by attempting to set up a meeting location to collect the fine payment.
Residents are reminded that the Cambria County Courts will never place calls or solicit payment by credit card, gift card, or any other means of electronic funds transfer for any reason.
Should you receive a phone call from a number or an individual claiming to be involved with or calling from the Cambria County Courts requesting money or payment of fines, fees or court costs, please do not provide any sensitive information or forms of payment of any kind.
Anyone receiving calls of this nature is encouraged to hang up immediately and contact state and/or local police as well as the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, Bureau of Consumer Protection at (800) 441-2555 or scams@attorneygeneral.gov.
